The "Arthurtown Community Library" is a collection of children's books  that will be housed in the Arthurtown Community Center under the direction of Ms. Patricia Dawkins the executive director. The library is being built by a consortium of  community groups including Hand Middle School, The United Way, The Columbia Urban League, The Shandon Cluster of Churches, and Reading is Power International an outreach project of Shandon United Methodist Church. Ms. Helen Schell's  6th Grade World History classes have been the driving force behind the project. They have solicited donations of new and used books school wide. On Saturday May 5th Ms. Schell's students along with other volunteers from the school and the community held a "Community Service Day" where they processed all the books for the library in preparation for it's  May 21st grand opening.

Question: What do you do to help out with the Arthurtown Library?

Mr. Mike Leonard created the book list that is being used for the Arthurtown Library and he is also building the bookcase.

“What is good about the Arthurtown library is that it serves the whole community…” says Mr. Leonard.

Mr. Mike Gray of the United Way helped build the community center where the library is located. He continues to help bring things out to the community. He brought the idea of collecting books to the United Way and together they have collected over seventy books for the library! He also has gotten churches involved and has been a major help!

Ms. Schell has set aside time almost every mourning along with a group of kids to help with the library. I also work with Mr. Mike Leonard and other community members to gather resources for the Library.

“We sort books, create card catalogs, and develop the website.” Replied Ms. Schell

Dee Albritton with the Fast Forward lab helped collect books and donated books to the library. Fast Forward provided Ms. Schell and her volunteers with a place to work before school. We also volunteered to help build the community center where the library will be located.

Mrs. Stiglbauer brought the idea of the Arthurtown Library to the Faculty in a meeting and talked with Dee Albritton about the idea. She and Mr. Leonard went to meet Ms. Schell.

Together all of these people have made and will make the Arthurtown Library a success.
